“Snow White Turns Sixty” Premieres in Los Angeles

“Snow White Turns Sixty,” a song cycle based on a dozen fairy tale poems by contemporary women poets, will have its premiere in Los Angeles on November 5 and 7. Dale Trumbore, a graduate student in music composition at the University of Southern California, composed the forty-minute work for female voices and piano, which will be performed by the Chamber Opera Group of USC. The poets represented in the work are Jeanne Marie Beaumont, Barbara Crooker, Annie Finch, Kathleen Jesme, Julie Kane, Katharyn Howd Machan, Eileen Moeller, Eve Rivkah, and Diane Thiel.

Performances will be at 7 PM on Friday, November 5, and 8 PM on Sunday, November 7, at the United University Church on the USC campus, 817 West 34th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007.

A native of Chatham, New Jersey, the 23-year-old Trumbore has won major awards for her music including the Society for Universal Sacred Music Composition Contest, the Lyrica Chamber Music Composition Contest, the Harmonium Choral Society Composition Contest, Chanticleer’s Student Composition Competition, and the National Federation of Music Clubs Composition Contest. She was also a finalist in the Ithaca College Choral Composition Contest and a featured composer of the International Alliance for Women in Music. Her chamber music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, the Boston New Music Initiative, the Neave Quartet, the Left Bank Concert Society, Nova Ensemble, and the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. Her choral works have been sung by groups including the New York Virtuoso Singers, the Orange County Women’s Chorus, the USC Oriana Choir, the University of Maryland Chamber Singers, the Harmonium Choral Society, and the Femmes de Chanson.

As an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, Trumbore double-majored in music composition and English, developing a special love for setting poetic texts to music. Though she was named first runner up in the 2009 Cape Cod Cultural Center national poetry competition, judged by Maxine Kumin, she prefers to highlight the talents of other poets through her musical ability. At USC, she is studying composition under Morten Lauridson and Donald Crockett.
