Nina Simone at Ronnie Scott’s

Her left hand rolls out a rhythm
like the melody of blood.
She seems to hang in the air like
music itself. The room
is dark, the people transfixed. Nina
Simone intones, God, God, God.
And suddenly He’s there.
She nods, because it’s her due.

– corey mesler
