After attending a Chagall exhibit in San Francisco, I was deeply moved by the way he portrayed his connection to his wife.  Around that time, my partner (Annie) and I were struggling with the illnesses of our parents, and so my sense of mortality was heightened.  I started thinking about how the longer you love someone, the more you become aware that one of you will suffer the loss of the other.  I wrote a number of poems grappling with these ideas that have appeared in Like All We Love.
