Although I grew up in New York City, I have lived for twenty years in  
Jakarta. And so I have had to be careful what I write. For a time I had  
to worry about the authoritarian Suharto regime, but since the tyrant's  
fall, Indonesia is the democratic home to a very free press. Yet I  
still worry: this very paragraph, like all emails from abroad to  
America, was likely read with impunity by the CIA.
