All poetry is personal. That's unavoidable, but I find that my poems are
more readable when I cast what I have to say in another time or place. In
"A Deadly Game of Power," I am reflecting a recent, distasteful brush with
raw power. By setting the poem in Stalin's Russia, I've highlighted the
issue without having to convince the reader that my own petty particulars
are universally important. More readers can connect with the Stalin story.
