In the shadows of that eeriest of the Great Lakes, Erie, The Black Swamp of Ohio, final corner of the state to be settled, was the region of my origins and birthplace of my poetry. Later, life among the echoes and contrasts of bordering areas tempered my vision. Poetry became the method of transcription.
