About "Sunburn" and Hopper's "People in the Sun": writing about the painting allowed me to recognize things I was unaware of on a conscious level – birth, sex, naked loneliness, death. All captured beautifully and without judgement. Red clogs & black waves on a blue Saturday – what's not to like?
Alex Grant is a native Scot. His book, Chains & Mirrors, winner of the 2006 Randall Jarrell Poetry Prize, has just been published by Harperprints and is available through Main Street Rag's bookstore. He was awarded WMSU’s 2004 Pavel Srut Poetry Fellowship in Prague, he was the 2006 winner of the Kakalak: An Anthology of Carolina Poets contest and he has been runner-up or finalist for The Pablo Neruda Prize, Discovery/The Nation, The Arts & Letters Poetry Prize and The Writers at Work Fellowship, among others. His work has recently appeared or is upcoming in a number of journals, including The Nation, Connecticut Review, North American Review, Arts & Letters, Nimrod, Seattle Review and Sycamore Review. He lives with his dangling participles and Celtic fondness for excess in Chapel Hill, NC.
