Abstract Expressionism

On the patio in the backyard
my daughter is splashing watercolors
onto paper. She is imitating
Jackson Pollock, her new concern.
She’s only nine but her canvases
are wide and pure. “Pollock’s Napkin”
and “Pollock’s List” she calls
them. They hang now on her bedroom
door, testaments to her deep
involvement with the world. Every
time I pass them my eye is arrested
anew, and my heart is engaged
like I don’t know what, something I
cannot call or grasp, something
right there, yet perhaps unnamable.
